لم تكن السياسة تشغل حيزاً فى حياتى، لذا لم أنخرط في أي حزب، ولم أنضم إلى أي تنظيم سياسي. كان العمل الاجتماعي يشدني باستمرار منذ تخرجي من كلية المعلمات بأمدرمان وقد تأثرت بوالدتي الرائدة نفيسة كامل التي كرست حياتها للعمل الاجتماعي. فانضممت إلى "جمعية حماية الطفولة والأمومة" ونشطت في" جميعة الصداقة السودانية- البريطانية".
إلى أن وقع انقلاب الجبهة الإسلامية في 30/6/1989م وما أعقبه من تداعيات مؤسفة عصفت فيمن عصت بشقيقي عبد المنعم الذي راح ضحية جريمة اهتز لها ضمير الإنسانية... كان ذلك الحدث المروع نقطة تحول ونقلة كبيرة في حياتي ترتب عليها أن ألقيت بنفسي في قلب العمل المعارض للنظام الدموي القائم فى الخرطوم. إن الوقائع التي رصدتها في هذا الكتاب، كانت بعضاً من محصلة فترة حافلة بالمواجهات والتحدي من جانبي، وبالرد الهجمي المجنون من قبل النظام الفاشي.
