لكل كتاب مقدمة يستهل بها المؤلف كتابه إلا أن معظم الكتاب قد درجوا على تدبيج المقدمة بعد الإنتهاء من التأليف والتصنيف، أما أنا فإني أنشئ مقدمتي قبل الشروع في وضع الكتاب، ولا أعتبر تصرفي هذا خروجاً على المألوف، وإنما أراه أقرب إلى المنطق والصواب، فالإنسان لا يمكن أن يكون بعد الإنتهاء من كتابة الموضوع أدرى مما كان قبل الإبتداء، وأنا أكره دخول البيوت من غير أبوابها.
لقد نزهت المقدمة عن الإسجاع والقوافي وبرأتها من الإعتذارات، فما قرأت مرة إعتذار مؤلف عما تخلل كتابه من سهو أو خطأ إلا وقلت فوراً هذا الإنسان أما أن يكون متوهماً في نفسه القوة والإجادة فإعتذاره تكبر وغرور، وأما أن يكون ضعيف الثقة بجدراته، متخوفاً من إرتكاب الأغلاط فهو يعتذر عن الأمر، الواقع.
إن بحوث هذا الكتاب هي عصارة اختبارات خمسة وثلاثين عاماً انفقتها بين المحافل والطروس، وصاحبت فيها فلاسفة العصور وجهابذة التاريخ العام، متنقلاً من الظلمات إلى النور، منقباً عن الحقائق الكامنة وراء حجب الغيب وأسرار الطبيعة، محاولاً الإهتداء إلى ما فيه خير الإنسانية وأخاؤها وإتحادها، وعسى أن أكون بعد هذا الجهاد الطويل، قد أصبت الهدف، وبلغت المراد، وما التوفيق إلا من عند الله تعالى، الهادي إلى سبل الصواب.
