تسبب تاريخ الماسونية الموغل في القدم في ضياع الكثير من الحقائق حول نشوئها وتكوينها، لذلك فمن غير الممكن تحديد المنشأ الحقيقي للماسونية من بين الجمعيات والزمر السرية الأخرى قديمة العهد.
لقد أنشئت الماسونية في بداياتها للوقوف في وجه انتشار الدين المسيحي الجديد. واعتمد الماسونيون المعاصرون على المبادئ نفسها التي كانت سائدة في بداية إنشاء تلك الحركة.
وحتى وقت قريب لم تكن رؤى المجتمع تجاه الماسونية رؤى محددة واضحة؛ فقد قال مناصروها: إنها منظمة خيرية تقدم مساعدات للفقراء، من غير أن يعلم أحد شيئاً عن ذلك، وهي لا تتدخل في مسائل البلاد السياسية والدينية، وتدعو إلى الالتزام بالمعايير الأخلاقية، وتصف الإله بأنه «مهندس الكون الأعظم».
أما خصوم الماسونية، فإنهم على العكس من هذا يؤكدون أن هذه الطائفة شديدة الخطورة على الاستقرار الداخلي في أي بلد كان، فهي إذ تدعو إلى الحريات المطلقة التي وهبتها الطبيعة للإنسان وخلقته على هذا النحو، فإنها تنظم تحت ستار هذه الدعوة الحركة الثورية لجماهير الشعب، وتؤله لويسفير تحت اسم مهندس الكون الأعظم، فتقلب رأساً على عقب مغزى كل المفاهيم التي اعتمدها العالم الديني عن الخير والشر، والفضيلة والرذيلة.
إن هذه المسائل أقلقت الكثير من كبار الشخصيات والمفكرين الأوروبيين لعشرات السنين. أما محافظة الحركة الماسونية على سرية نشاطها على الرغم من توافر «المناخ الحر»، فقد أثار الكثير من الشكوك حول ماهية نشاطها.
