كتاب الكشف هو مجموع تأويلات لعدة آيات من القرآن يأخذ المصنف قبلها العهد بالكتمان على القارئ، ومواضيع التأويلات هي وصية علي وإمامته وإمامة الستة من ولده وكرّه على قبل يوم القيامة وظهور الإمام السابع وهو المهدي القائم ثم ذات الله وصفاته وأسرار الحروف والمعنى الباطن لأحكام الشرع مع ملاحظة وجوب التعبد بظاهر لفظ تلك الأحكام، وينقسم الكتاب إلى ستة أقسام يفصل بينها البسملة غير أن المواضيع كثيراً ما تتداخل وتتقاطع.
الرسالة الأولى أكثرها في إثبات إمامة علي والطعن على مخالفيه، ثم في ظهور المهدي، الرسالة الثانية موضوعها ذات الله وعرشه وكرسيه مع رد موجز على المشبعين ونبذة من المعاني الرمزية لحروف المعجم. الرسالة الثالثة فيها يرجع الكلام إلى إثبات إمامة علي والطعن على مخالفيه، ثم الكلام في مقامات أوليائه والتنويه بذكر العيون الثلاثة المقداد وأبي ذر وسليمان الفارسي، وفي بعض المواضع تعود الإشارة إلى الرسالة الأولى.
الرسالة الرابعة تحتوي على آراء ونظريات في الحروف والأصوات، الرسالة الخامسة أكثرها تأويل الحج والكعبة ثم البحث في معنى لفظ الكتاب والآية والصديق والنبي وفي مراتب المؤمنين ودرجاتهم والكلام في البراءة من الكافرين من مواضع متفرقة وقصة محمد بن أبي بكر وينتهي هذا الفصل بخاتمة كخاتمات الكتب. الرسالة السادسة فيها يرجع أكثر الكلام إلى إثبات إمامة علي.
