كانت أول مسألة إجتماعية عالجها "إميل دوركايم" هى مسألة "تقسيم العمل الإجتماعى" فألف فيها رسالة قدمها للسربون سنة 1893، ونال بها درجة الدكتوراه، ثم تدرج من هذه الدراسة الخاصة إلى ابتكار أعتقد انها أفضل الطرق التى تتفق مع طبيعة الظواهر الإجتماعية، فحدد أصول هذه الطريقة فى كتاب "قواعد المنهج فى علم الإجتماع" وهو الكتاب الذى رفعه إلى مصاف كبار الأساتذة، وأخيراً فتحت لسربون أمامه أبوابها، وجعلته أستاذاً لعلم الإجتماع فى سنة 1902.
وهذا الكتاب الأخير هو الذى رأيت أن أترجمه، لما لمسته من اهميته الكبرى، ولما عرفته من حاجة هؤلاء الطلاب إلى قراءته مترجماً بسبب ما يمتاز به من شدة التركيز وعظم الفائدة، كذلك رأيت أن أقدمه، فى نفس الوقت، لجمهور المثقفين فى الشرق لما وجدته من شدة شغف القراء بهذاا لنوع من الدراسات.
ويعترف "دوركايم" ان هذا الكتاب يحتوى على كثير من آرائه التى عرضها فى كتاب "تقسيم العمل الإجتماعى" ، ولكنه آثر أن يقدم نتائج هذا البحث على حدة وان يرفقها بأدلتها، ويصورها بأمثلة أخذها من هذا الكتاب الأخير، ومن كتب أخرى له لم تكن قد نشرت بعد.
