إنّ هذه الدراسة لموارد ابن أبي الحديد خطت خطوة أكثر وأبعد من سابقاتها ألا وهي توثيق النصوص التي أوردها ابن أبي الحديد في كتابه ( شرح نهج البلاغة) وإرجاعها إلى مصدرها الأصلية المطبوعة منها والمخطوطة، وهذه الخطوة لها فائدة كبيرة للباحثين في المستقبل وذلك لأن كتاب (شرح نهج البلاغة) من أضخم وأوسع مؤلفات ابن أبي الحديد، بل أهمها وأشهرها على الإطلاق. فيمكن أن يقال عنه الكتاب الذي حفظ اسم ابن أبي الحديد وزاد في شهرته، فالكتاب أشبه بدائرة معارف مزودة بمعلومات تاريخية وأدبية ولغوية وكلامية على صعيد واحد، فهو يجمع بين دفتيه المتعة والفائدة في وقت واحد.
وأهمية هذه الدراسة تكمن في مراجعة وتوثيق ما حفظه لنا ابا أبي الحديد من النصوص والمؤلفات التي أصبحت في عداد المفقود من التراث العربي هذا اليوم، وهذا أمر بالغ الأهمية يضفي قيمة كبيرة إلى قيمة مادة الكتاب. فمن تلك الكتب التي تخص التاريخ مثلاَ: كتاب (السقيفة) للجوهري، وكتاب (صفين) لابن ديزيل، وكتاب (صفين) لهشام الكلبي، وكتاب (صفين) للمدائني، وحفظ لنا نصوصاَ كثيرة من كتاب (الأخبار الموفقيات) للزبير بن بكار، ومن كتاب (تاريخ بغداد) لابن طيفور، ومن كتاب (التاريخ) لابن نفطويه.
أما كتب الأدب فقد حفظ لنا نصوصاَ من الكتب التالية: كتاب (التاج) وكتاب (النوادر) لابن الأعرابي. وكتاب (ملح الممالحة) لابن ناقيا، ونصوصاَ لكتب (الأمالي) لكل من : ابن الأعرابي، وابن حبيب، وابن دريد، والأنباري، وغلام ثعلب، وأبو أحمد العسكري.
وفيما يخص كتب العقائد، حفظ لنا منها نصوصاَ عديدة كما هو الحال في : كتاب (تفضيل الإمام علي عليه السلام)، للإسكافي، وكتاب (المقالات) لزرقان وكتاب (افتراق هاشم وعبد شمس) لابن أبي رؤية الدبّاس، وكتاب (الآراء والديانات) للنوبختي، وكتاب (شرح المقالات) للقاضي عبد الجبار، وكتاب (المقالات) لابن قبّة، وكتاب (المقالات) لابن الهيصي وبذلك يمكن إعتباره " أشبه بمتحف لمخطوطات ممزقة قديمة"، وقد استوعبت هذه الدراسة لأسماء العديد من المصنفات، فقد استخلصت قائمة بأسماء المؤلفات التي ذكرها ابن أبي الحديد في كتابه فإذا بها تضم [157] كتاباَ ومصنفاَ ألف جميعها خلال القرون : الثاني والثالث والرابع والخامس الهجري، ولموضوعات شتى.
