يتضمّن هذا الكتاب خلاصة خبرة غنية، اكتسبها مبدع فذّ خلال مسيرته الحياتية بكل ما فيها من محن قاسية وصدامات عنيفة، وزلاّت مخزية، ومواقف نبيلة، وإنجازات إبداعية مبهرة.
استمرّ دوستويفسكي من عام 1876 حتى عام 1881 (مع إنقطاع دام عامين انشغل خلالهما بكتابة رواية "الإخوة كارمازوف") بإصدار "يوميات كاتب" في مطبوعة مستقلة، تصدر مرة في الشهر، كقاعدة عامة، في أعداد مفردة، يتراوح حجم كل منها بين ملزمة ونصف وملزمتين (وتتألف الملزمة من ست عشرة صفحة).
وقد بيّن الكاتب في الإعلان الذي نشره مسبقاً في صحف بطرسبورغ، أن المطبوعة: "ستكون يوميات بالمعنى الحرفي للكلمة، ستكون تقريراً عن الإنطباعات التي تكوّنت لديّ فعلاً في كل شهر، تقريراً عمّا شاهدته وسمعته، وقرأته".
وكان الكاتب يرصد جميع الجوانب الدقيقة في تطوّر "الحياة الحية"، ويتابع بإنتباه شديد إنعكاس تجلّياتها في الصحافة الروسية والأجنبية، ويذكر شاهدو عيان: أن الكاتب كان يستعرض الجرائد والمجلات يومياً "حتى آخر عمود منها"، ويحرص على أن يلتقط من خلال التنوّع الكبير في الوقائع الهامّة والثانوية، وحدتها الداخلية وأسسها الإجتماعية - النفسية، وجوهرها الروحي - الأخلاقي، ومغزاها الفلسفي - التاريخي.
ومن الطريف أن بعض المثقفين الروس المعاصرين لدوستويفسكي، كانوا يرون: أن تجلّي عبقريته في "يومياته" يفوق تجلّيها في "أعماله الإبداعية".
وتأتي الترجمة الراقية الرصينة المتأنية: لتضفي على العمل إبداعاً على إبداع، يقول المترجم في مقدّمته: ... وعادت إلى ذاكرتي في تلك اللحظة إجابة أحد الشعراء الروس المعاصرين المشهورين، عندما سأله كاتب سوري، في ندوة أدبية عُقدت في دمشق، عن الأديب الروسي المعاصر الذي يقرأ له الآن، فقال: إنه دوستويفسكي، ورداً على إستغراب السائل وتأكيده أنه يقصد بسؤاله الكتّاب المعاصرين بالذات، أجابه الشاعر بثقة: وهل هناك من هو أكثر معاصرةً لنا من دوستويفسكي؟.
