كتبت هذه الرواية بين 1847 و 1849، حين كان عمر دستويفسكي دون الثلاثين ربيعاً، بحيث يضع في المشهد فتاة شابة يتيمة مغرمة ومتيمة بزوج أمها - عازف الكمان الذي من الممكن أن يكون حقاً عبقرياً ولكنه مدمن على الخمر - ثم مفتونة بهوى ابنة الرجل الذي كفلها أخيراً وعلّمها في قصره.
وفي بعض الآراء أن دستويفسكي مثَّل "عقدة إليكترا" بحبّ نيتوتشكا لزوج أمها السكير وإنجذابها إليه، والشعورِ بالعداءِ والنفورِ تجاه أمها البائسة التي كان يتخذها ذريعة لفشل عبقريته.
كما ترى ذاتُ الآراء أنه مثَّل أيضاً لما يُعرف "بالحبّ المِثْلي" من خلال حبّ نيتوتشكا لإبنة الأمير الكفيلِ بها إلى حدّ تقبيلِ قدمها ويديها وشعرها وكتفيها، وغمرتْ وغسلتْ حتى منديلها بالقبلات والدموع.
ومن خلال مسار حياتها المضطربة، يتمّ الكشفُ عن شغفها بالغناء.
هذه الرواية، المعتبرةُ كعمل رئيسي، والمنشورةُ جزئياً، توقفتْ كتابتُها بسبب إعتقال دستويفسكي سنة 1849، وظلت غير مكتملة، ثم استُؤنفتْ كتابتُها ونُشرتْ من جديد عام 1860 وسنة 1866، وتوقفتْ في منتصف مشهد محدّد، وبالضبط، حين أدركت الطفلةُ البطلةُ مرحلة البُلوغ والنُّبوغ.
وبالتالي، فإن دستويفسكي، لم يتحدث، في مكان آخر، حتى الآن، بمثل هذه القوة الغنائية، وعلى هذا النحو العميق، عن الفن وعن الطفولة.
