بين 22/12 و27/2001 انعقد في بغداد والبصرة احتفال المربد الشعري السابع عشر تحت شعار، لماضينا نغني لمستقبلنا نطلق الكلمة، وقد شارك في هذه الدورة قطاع واسع من شعراء الوطن العربي والأقطار ممثلين باتجاهات شعرية وأجيال مختلفة في الثقافة العربية المعاصرة.
ورافق انعقاد المربد حلقة دراسية في الشعر وهو تقليد أتبعه المربد منذ سنوات، وكان عنوان الحلقة الدراسية (الشعر إلى أين؟) توزعت أعمالها على ثلاثة محاور، الأول، جدل التراث والحداثة واستغرق ثلاثة جلسات وشارك فيه اثنا عشر باحثاً، والثاني: واقع الشعر في العالم وشارك فيه ثلاثة باحثين، والمحور الثالث الشعر وفلسطين (شعر الانتفاضة) وشارك فيه ثلاثة باحثين.
لقد حرصت اللجنة التحضيرية للحلقة الدراسية على أن تكون البحوث في مجملها مكملة للخطوات التي بدأتها الحلقة الدراسية للمربد حيث سعت إلى إكمال صورة البحث عن القيم الإبداعية للشعر العربي المعاصر خلال النصف الثاني من القرن الماضي.
إضافة إلى دراسة المنجز النقدي الذي درس وقوم تلك المرحلة من عمل القصيدة العربية الحديثة. حتى إنها وجدت نفسها أمام السؤال الكبير (الشعر إلى أين؟) بعد أن تسنى لها تقويم مرحلة ليست قصيرة في علم القصيدة العربية، ليكون محوراً أساسياً لحلقتها الدراسية التي يجد القارئ محل بحوثها في هذا الكتاب.
