ينظر كتاب "في تقسيم العمل الاجتماعي" في جهد معالجة حوادث الحياة الخلقيّة تبعاً لطريقة العلوم الوضعية. أما المسألة الأخرى التي كانت الباعث إلى هذه الدراسة، فهي مسألة العلاقات بين الشخصية الفردية والتعاون الاجتماعي. فكيف حدث أن الفرد يصبح أشد خضوعاً للمجتمع، في حين يصبح أكثر استقلالاً؟ وكيف يصبح في آن واحد، أكثر فردية وأشد تبعية؟ ذلك أن مما لا ريب فيه أن هاتين الحركتين، مهما يكن التناقض الذي يظهر بينهما، تتتابعان بصورة متوازية. هذه هي المشكلة التي حدّدها الكتاب وعرضها بأمانة فلسفية نوعية. حيث يركز الكتاب في بحثه أن الشيء الذي يحلّ هذا التناقض الظاهر، إنما هو تغيّر في التعاون الاجتماعي، ناشىء عن النمو المتزايد دوماً، لتقسيم العمل.
