من المواد المساعدة على معرفة اللغة معرفة واضحة، مادة قواعد النحو والصرف. وقد عرضت هذه المادة، منذ عهد واضعيها، بطرائق متعددة، كانت الطريقة الأولى الطريقة القياسية. وهي أقدم طرق تدريس قواعد اللغة والقياس انتقال الفكر من الحقيقة العامة الى الحقائق الخاصة ومن المبادئ الى النتائج.
أما الطريقة الثانية فهي الطريقة الاستنباطية أو الإستقرائية: والاستقراء هو انتقال الفكر من الحقائق الجزئية الى القانون العام، ومن الحالات الخاصة الى الاحكام العامة، وذلك بأن يعرض المدرس على تلاميذه مجموعة كبيرة من الأمثلة المحسوسة، ليتدرج بهم الى استنباط القاعدة العامة. أما الطريقة المعدلة فهي الطريقة الحديثة تاريخياً. وتقوم هذه الطريقة على المقولة التي تدعو الى توفير نص للقراءة في موضوع معين يطلب الى التلاميذ مطالعته وفهم معناه ثم يشار الى بعض الجمل وما تحمله من خصائص. ويلي ذلك عملية استقراء القاعدة، للوصول في النهاية الى مرحلة التطبيق التي تهتم الدرس.
وقد درج المؤلف في هذا الكتاب على هذا النهج التربوي الحديث. فبعد اختيار النص، انتزع منه الامثلة المناسبة لموضوع الدرس وناقشها مثالاً حتى بلوغه القاعدة. ثم عرض مجموعة من الاختبارات، الغاية منها قياس مدى استيعاب التلميذ للدرس، وعلاج الفجوات الحاصلة في ذلك الاستيعاب.
