تحاول هذه الدراسة الإجابة عن السؤال التالي: ما هي علاقة الديموقراطية بالحروب التي نشبت بين دول الشرق الأوسط من عام 1945 وحتى عام 1989؟ فمن المعروف أن دول الشرق الأوسط قد خاضت أكثر من حرب، وأن بعض هذه الحروب حدثت فيما بينها خلال تلك الفترة: كحرب فلسطين عام 1948 وحرب قناة السويس عام 1956، وحرب حزيران/يونيو 1967، وحرب تشرين الأول/أكتوبر 1973، وأزمة الخليج الأولى (الحرب العراقية- الإيرانية) عام 1980. وقد حدثت بعض الحروب بين دول من الشرق الأوسط ودول من خارج الشرق الأوسط، كحرب باكستان والهند خلال الفترة 1965-1971 وحرب الصومال وأثيوبيا عام 1977. ومن أسباب هذه الحروب، فإن الباحثين يرجعونها إلى عوامل وحدوية، أو الرغبة في الاستقلال، كالحرب الهندية والباكستانية حول استقلال بنغلادش، أو حرب أوجادين حول ضم إلى الصومال، وبعض هذه الحروب في الشرق الأوسط، كالرغبة في السيطرة مثلا، أو الهيمنة، أو زيادة القوة، فالدراسات السابقة التي تناولت موضوع الديموقراطية والحرب أشارت فقط إلى بعض الحالات؛ كالحرب القبرصية-التركية عام 1974. ومن المعتقد أنه لا توجد دراسة مستقلة خصصت لدراسة علاقة الديموقراطية بالحرب في دول الشرق الأوسط، ومن هنا تأتي أهمية هذه الدراسة، وبخاصة أن الدراسات المتعلقة بالحروب في الشرق الأوسط ركزت في معظمها على الحرب كعامل مستقل، أو الإنفاق العسكري أو التنمية. لذا كان هدف الباحث في دراسته هذه تناول الديموقراطية في الشرق الأوسط كحالة وبشكل مستقل، معتمداً على أفكار أشهر الباحثين الذين كتبوا في هذا المجال.
