كتاب تاوتي تشنغ هو أول كتاب فلسفي في الصين، ولعله أول كتاب في تاريخ الفلسفة العام، إذا إفترضنا أن مؤلفه، هو لاوتز نفسه، ومع التشكيك في ذلك فمن المؤكد أنه تضمن تعاليمه نفسها التي أصبحت المصدر الأساسي لمدرسة فلسفية شغلت الصين عشرات القرون. كتبت الفصول الواحدة والثمانون على شكل قصائد، لكنها ليست في أية حال من الشعر، رغم جنوحها في بعض الأحيان إلى التشبيهات والإستعارات، فسطور الكتاب أشبه بآيات الكتب المقدسة، عبارات مكثفة، ومرموزة في الكثير منها. ويمكن مقارنة هذه النصوص في بعض المواضع بالآيات المتشابهة في القرآن، وقد تجسد ذلك في تعدد الشروح التي وضعت للكتاب، وإختلاف الشراح في أغراض الفيلسوف، كما هي في تعدد الترجمات، التي أجريت له منذ القرن التاسع عشر إلى اللغات الأوروبية الرئيسية، وتفاوتها البالغ نظراً للتعارض الناجم عن تفاوت فهم المترجمين، ومعظمهم من المتضلعين في الفلسفة الصينية. إن الترجمة الحالية لكتاب التاو هي أول ترجمة عربية، وقد إعتمد فيها على الترجمة الإنكليزية التي أجراها البحاثة الصيني المتأمرك جيافو فنغ بالتعاون مع الأميريكية جان إنكلش. وفي نصوص معينة فضل الرجوع إلى ترجمة نيدهام، عالم الصينيات الإنكليزي العظيم، حيثما توفر نص مترجم بتمامه في سفره المكرس لدراسة الفلسفة الصينية وهو الحادي عشر من مسلسل أسفاره التي إستوعبت تاريخ وحضارة الصين.
