يشكل كتاب «50 فكرة يجب أن تعرفها عن الطب» جزءاً من صورة ممارسة الطب الحديث في القرن الحادي والعشرين فهو بمثابة خريطة عمل للطبيب، يساعده في ممارسة المهنة التي ما زالت تعتمد على المعاينة المباشرة؛ وتدوين الملاحظات ودراستها؛ والبحث عن وسائل تأكيد الشكوك؛ ومن ثمّ تقديم العلاج المُناسب.
وجاءت فكرة الكتاب من سلسلة ثقافية تُسمى «50 فكرة يجب أن تعرفها عن الطب» والتي تمت ترجمة بعضها إلى اللغة العربية، وشملت خمسين فكرة يجب معرفتها عن الفيزياء والوراثة والأفكار الرقمية والدين والفلسفة والأفكار السياسية وتاريخ الحرب والعالم وعلم النفس وغيرها، لذلك جاء هذا الكتاب في (علم الطب) ليَسُد نقصاً في هذا الحقل المعرفي والحيوي الهام ويقدم قصة الطب الحديث في أبسط صورة ممكنة.
وبناءً على ما تقدم يشير مؤلف الكتاب الدكتور عمر الحمادي؛ أنه ليس من أهداف هذا الكتاب تقديم استشارة طبية أو علاجية للناس؛ بل يرمي إلى رسم ثقافة مقبولة لأغلى ما يملك الناس في حياتهم وهو صحة أبدانهم. يرجو المؤلف أن يُقدم الكتاب إضاءة للراغبين في دخول كلية الطب ليتعرفوا إلى كيفية حصول الطبيب على مؤهلاته التي تنقله من مسؤولية أدنى إلى أخرى أعلى، فقد يجد طالب المدرسة أو طالب العلوم في هذا الكتاب لمحة عن التخصصات التي يحلم بخوض غمارها وهو لا يدرك صورتها الكاملة (...). ومع أن هذا الكتاب ليس تخصصياً؛ إلا أنه لا بد من الإشارة إلى أن ذكر العِلاجات المختلفة لبعض الأمراض لا يستلزم أن المريض سيستخدم واحداً منها أو كلّها، وأن إيراد طُرق التشخيص لمرضٍ لا يعني أن الكتاب سيطرقها كلها، فهدف هذا الكتاب هو تقديم أمثلة لعمل الأطباء والتخصصات المُساندة، كمهنة التمريض، ومهنة الصيدلة، واختصاصي التغذية، والصيدلاني وطب الأشعة وطب الجينات وعلم المختبر وغيرها من التخصصات المكملة لمهنة الطبيب.
