إن أهمية البراجماتية كفلسفة معاصرة حاكمة، أو بالأحرى أهمية آثارها العملية على عالمنا الحديث من ناحية، وعدم الاهتمام عند كثيرين من الباحثين بالتدقيق في بديهية الأصول اليونانية للبراجماتية هو الذي حدا بنا أساساً إلى تقديم هذا البحث.
وقد اقتصر اهتمامنا هنا على اقتفاء الأصول التاريخية للبراجماتية في الفكر اليوناني، أو بعبارة أخرى تأصيل الفلسفة البراجماتية المعاصرة في الفكر القديم، وقد استخدم الباحث المنهج التاريخي التحليلي في بحثه والذي يعتبر أكثر المناهج التي يمكن أن تتفق مع طبيعة هذا البحث الذي يحاول اقتفاء آثار النزعة البراجماتية المعاصرة في جذورها القديمة.
وقسم الباحث دراسته إلى ستة فصول، ورأى أن يبدأ في الفصل الأول بتعريف للمصطلح براجماتيك. وكان من المنطقي أن نعرض بصورة واضحة وكافية في الوقت نفسه للإتجاه والفلسفة البراجماتية على المشهد الحديث والمعاصر- وقد اختار الباحث المشهد الأميريكي بالذات ومنه اخترنا الرواد بهدف إظهار الأصول والمبادئ والمقولات العامة للمنهج.
وفي الفصل الثاني يقتفي الباحث الآثار البراجماتية في الفكر اليوناني، فيعرض لبعض المقولات الأساسية عند الفلاسفة السابقين على السوفسطائية في محاولة لبيان ما إذا كانت ستوجد عندهم جذوراً للنزعة البراجماتية أو جذوراً مضادة لهذه النزعة فتعرضنا لفكر هيراقليطس وبارمنيدس وأمبادقليس وأنكساجوراس وديمقريطس.
وقد أفرد الباحث الفصل الثالث ليبين موقف السوفسطائية من المعرفة والحقيقة والجذور البراجماتية عند هؤلاء العلماء الجوالة. وفي الفصول من الرابع إلى الخامس يعرض الباحث لموقف الفلاسفة الثلاثة العظام من النزعة البراجماتية سقراط، أفلاطون، أرسطو، ونقدم لها. هذا النقد الذي جعل هذه النزعة أكثر وضوحاً وجلاءاً.
