الدَّمِيري (742 - 808 هـ = 1341 - 1405 م)
محمد بن موسى بن عيسى بن علي الدميري، أبو البقاء، كمال الدين: باحث، أديب، من فقهاء الشافعية. من أهل دميرة (بمصر) ولد ونشأ وتوفي بالقاهرة. كان يتكسب بالخياطة ثم أقبل على العلم وأفتى ودرّس، وكانت له في الأزهر حلقة خاصة، وأقام مدة بمكة والمدينة. من كتبه (حياة الحيوان - ط) مجلدان، و (حاوي الحسان من حياة الحيوان - خ) اختصره بنفسه من كتابه (قاله علي الخاقاني، في مجلة المجمع العلمي العراقي 8: 227) و (الديباجة) في شرح كتاب ابن ماجة، في الحديث، خمس مجلدات، و (النجم الوهاج - خ) جزء منه، في شرح منهاج النووي [ثم طُبع]، و (أرجوزة في الفقه) و (مختصر شرح لامية العجم للصفدي - خ) [ثم طُبع]

توج علم الحيوان عند العرب في الماضي بكتاب (حياة الحيوان الكبرى) لكمال الدين محمد بن موسى الدميري (1341- 1405م)، وقد سار المؤلف فيه على منهج رتب فيه أسماء الحيوان حسب حروف الهجاء، وجمع في أبحاثه بين العلم والأدب والحقائق والأوهام والقصص والتاريخ والأدب والفقه الإسلامي.
وانطلاقاً من أهمية هذا الكتاب العلمية إذا ما قورنت بكتب علم الحيوان في العصور الحديثة، ولأجل توظيف صياغات مصطلحات علم الحيوان الحديثة لفظاً واشتقاقاً بشكل صحيح، عمل الباحث "أسعد الفارس" على تهذيب وتصنيف كتاب الدميري (حياة حيوان) الذي يعتبره الروضة الأولى التي تفرقنا على اسم الحيوان وطريقة نطقه، وما قيل فيه في الماضي قبل التعامل مع المصادر الحديثة، التي تضع الحيوان في صفه ورتبته وفصيلته وجنسه، في صفحات زينت بصوره الملونة.
من هنا جاء هذا العمل ليستفاد منه في ميدان علم الحيوان (المختصين والعاملين في حقل التعليم) مع تعريب المصنف للمصطلح الحيوي (البيولوجي) الحديث، مع المحافظة على سلامة النصوص التي هي من صلب علم الحيوان، فجاء النص مترابطاً مع روح العصر، يتضمن تصنيفاً مقتضباً للحيوانات المدروسة، بحيث ربط المصنف فيه اسم الحيوان في كتب التراث بمصطلحاته اللاتينية الحديثة، وذلك بالإعتماد في التصنيف على معجم الحيوان لأمين معلوف، لأنه أقرب معاجم علم الحيوان لمضمون كتب التراث المهتمة بعلم الحيوان.
هذا، وقد تم إلحاق هذا الكتاب بتصنيف آخر لعلم الحيوان وهو كتاب "عجائب الحيوان من كتاب عجائب المخلوقات وغرائب الموجودات" للعلامة زكريا بن محمد بن محمود القزويني (1208- 1283م) وهو في مضمونه مجموعة من استطرادات متنوعة في علم الطبيعة والسياسة والتاريخ والأدب.
