تناولنا في هذه الدراسة مؤلفا يغوص في القدم لعالم عربيّ فذّ من علماء القرن الرابع الهجري، ترك بصمات قوية وأثرا راسخا في تاريخ العربية، وهو الكتاب الذي يهدف فيه ابن جني ت 392هـ إلى أن يقدّم وصفا لأصوات العربية وهو ما صرّح به في مقدمته، لكنّنا نجده حينما يأتي للجانب التطبيقي لا يكتفي بوصف الأصوات المفردة بل يتعداه إلى عرض الطريقة المثلى لتركيب هذه الأصوات، ووجدناه كتابا يشتمل ضروبا شتى من علوم العربية ويضم في تضاعيفه الكثير من المسائل النحوية على اختلاف المذاهب بصرية وكوفية وبغدادية، هذا ما جعلنا نراه مصدرا هاما في تعليمية اللغة العربية بالرغم من أنّه غيّب فيه كليّة عناصر ما فوق التركيب كالنبر والتنغيم، التي يراها المحدثون ضرورية للتمكّن من ناصية هذه اللغة أو تلك.
