المؤلف هو أحد دعاة الإصلاح السياسي، في المملكة العربية السعودية،. كما أنه من الذين انتهجوا أسلوباً سلمياً في المطالبة بالإصلاح، وهو في هذا الكتاب يعرض لمعاناته في السجن المركزي حيث قاده نشاطه إلى هناك، فبدأت بذلك معاناته التي سجلها في مقالات وقصائد وقطع نثرية، إذ يصف المؤلف لحظات اعتقاله الأولى، وسير التحقيقات الأولية معه.
ثم يقدم بعد ذلك عدداً من المقالات التي نشرها في فترات متباعدة، تتضمن دعوته إلى الإصلاح وآراءه ووجهات نظره في العملية الإصلاحية. ويضمن الكتاب أيضاً بعض القصائد الوجدانية والوطنية التي جادت بها قريحته في سجن وزارة الداخلية بالرياض وفي معتقلات أخرى نقل إليها خلال فترة احتجازه.
لا تنحصر استفادتي من السجن في امتلاكي الوقت، الزائد عن الحاجة، للاختلاء بالذات، وإنما لتأمل ما يستحق التسجيل أو النسيان على السواء. وقد وجدتني أمام ذكريات متشعبة، تحتاج إلى كثير من إعادة الترتيب، وهو ما يصعب علي، ولذا وجدت أن تحويلها إلى شكل من أشكال السرد سيحررني منها، ويفتح الباب أمامي لكتابتها.
من أين أبدا؟
من اللحظات الأولى للحادثة، أم من نهايتها التي لم تكتمل بعد! وبعد محاولات كثيرة للعثور على لحظة التدوين، وجدت أن اختيار هذا اليوم، سيمكنني من مراوحة التنقل بين أزمنة وأمكنة عديدة ولذا اخترته للبدء.
في مساء هذا اليوم، أكون قد أكملت مدة 26 يوماً في سجن المباحث (الكائن في سجن الدمام القديم) وهي مدة كافية لمثلي لتجاوز مرحلة التحقيق والتكيف مع مناخ المعتقل الانفرادي.
واليوم هو السبت 12/4/2004م، بداية الأسبوع، وعودة الطلاب والموظفين إلى أعمالهم، وما يبعث في النفس آمال تحريك قضية اعتقالي من جديد، وكنت أتقلب على فراشي في غرفة السجن الثانية، التي تم تحويلي إليها منذ أسبوع، بعد أن اتضح للمحققين -حينها- عدم قبولي بكتابة تعهد يلزمني بالتوقف عن ممارسة أي نشاط يتعلق بالمطالبة بالإصلاح السياسي والدستوري في المملكة.
