بسخريته المعهودة ولغته المتينة يلج غازي القصيبي بوابات الخيال ليرسم لنا صورة ساخرة عن واقعنا المرير، يأخذنا في رحلة وهمية إلى جزيرة "ميدوسا" الأسطورية النائية مع صفوة من أبناء الأمة العربستانية المنتشرين هنا وهناك والمنغمسين في ترهاتهم وتفاهاتهم حتى العظم. وعربستان هنا هي كل دولة عربية ولا تعني أي دولة عربية. ومع هؤلاء الـ"سبعة" يواصل القصيبي مهمته في التحريض على النهوض من الغفوة، ويقودنا كي نتساءل مع أنفسنا إلى أي مدى يمكن أن يفرز الواقع شخصيات مثل شخصيات القصيبي وهم حقيقة ليسوا من نسج الخيال بل هم نحن بكل نزقنا وسطحيتنا.
إن أشخاصاً مثل أنور مختارجي والفلكي بصراوي علوان موجودون بيننا حقاً ففيهم الشاعر والفيلسوف والصحفي والطبيب والفلكي ورجل السياسة، وهؤلاء هم أبطال الواقع الذي نرزح تحت وطأة عذاباته. لقد سقط هؤلاء جميعاً في الامتحان، امتحان الرجولة وكانت نهايتهم المضحكة المبكية التي رسمها لهم في نهاية الرواية: "أوضح تقرير الطبيب الشرعي أن الرجال السبعة ماتوا غرقاً، وقد تبين من التحليل أنهم تعاطوا كميات كبيرة من المخدرات والكحول. أما المرأة، التي وجدت على الشاطئ عارية، فلم يتضح للطبيب الشرعي، بعد سبب وموتها، ولم يعثر في دمها على أي آثار لمخدرات أو كحول، ولم تظهر بجسمها أي إصابات. كما ظهر من الفحص أنها عذراء...".
