يجمع معلَمو الكنيسة على أن القدَيس أوغسطينس يحتَل المقام الأوَل بين الآباء، ولا نظير له في القدرة على شرح الكتب المقدَسة وتعليمها، والربط بين رموزها وحقائقها، لما يتمتَع به من عقل نيَر وموهبة نادرة في البلاغة والإقناع. وعلى مدى أجيال طويلة ما برح ملافنة الكنيسة ينهلون من معين عبقريته الفذَة. ولا شك في أنَ أسقف هيبَون ضرورة حتميَة لكلَ من أراد التعمَق في معرفة الحقائق المسيحية. وعلى الذين يرغبون في تعلَم الخطابة والوعظ والكرازة وفنَ الإقناع أن يطالعوا القدَيس أوغسطينس.
بالإضافة إلى العظات التقليدية التي كان من القدَيس يلقيها في مناسبات الأعياد السيَدية وأعياد الرسل والشهداء والقدَيسين، حتَى يكاد ألاَ يخلو يوم أو ليلة من عظة، فإنَه خصَص وقتاً وافراً وبذل جهداً مضنياً، حين تولَى شرح كتاب المزامير، لما رأى فيه من رموز نبوية ومن بلاغة أدبية تتوافق مع أسلوبه، وبخاصَة، لأنَه رأى في داود، الملك القدير والمحبوب والمتألم.
وفي هذا الكتاب ترجمة لعظات القدَيس أوغسطينس في المزامير وهو الجزء الأول من الأجزاء الستة التي تضم العظات في المزامير المائة والخمسين، ويقع كل جزء منها في نحو ستمائة صفحة.
