كتاب بين الكثير من الكتب التي تركها للعالم قدّيسنا العظيم أوغسطنيس، الذي عاش بين جيلَيْن، بين النصف الأخير من الجيل الخامس الميلاديّ والربع الأوّل من الجيل السادس، فمهر بمواعظه وكتاباته معاصريه وعارفيه، ولا تزال مؤلَّفاته التي كان لي شرف نقل اليسير منها إلى اللغة العربيّة، تشغل مفكّري العلام وتستقطب إهتمام فلاسفته ولا هوتيّيه، لما فيها من أفكار ما شاخت مع الزمن، بل ظلّت وستظلّ جديدة ينهل منها كلّ طالب علم مستزيداً من غناها الروحيّ والفلسفيّ.
وهذا الكتاب استوقفني أسلوبه الخاصّ في البحث عن الحقيقة، وقد قلّ مَن جاراه فيه كاتب أو فيلسوف عرفُته حتّى الآن، بحيث جُعل النقاش في موضوع الحقيقة بين الكاتب والعقل، وسمّاه محاورة الذات، وفي اللغة اللاتينيّة التي نقلتهُ عنها إلى العربيّة: "Soliloquia".
وفيه جولات يتخطّى من خلالها الكاتبُ الأسلوبَ العاديّ المألوف، فيتّخذ صوراً وتشابيه رغبة في التبسيط وصولاً إلى ما يرتاح إليه ويطمئنّ المؤلِّف والقارئ معاً؛ فعسى أن يجد فيه مَن أَلِفوا قراءة أوغسطينس، والتأمّل في أفكاره، ما يساعدهم على الوصول إلى ما يبتغونه من طمأنينة للنفس، وغنى للعقل، يقودان إلى سعادة لا بدّ منها ولا يُنال منها شيء، في عالم يتقاتل فيه الناس على مالٍ ينفد، وزعامةٍ واهية، وتسلَّط لا يرتاح إليه الممسك بزمامه، والعاملُ على بسطه على دول وشعوب تئنّ وترزح تحت نيره الثقيل، وتتوق إلى التحرّر منه بوسائل شتّى.
