يُعَدُّ الطَّيالِسيُّ أوَّلَ مَنْ صَنَّفَ في المَسانيد، والمسانيدُ: مصنفاتٌ حديثيةٌ التزم مصنِّفوها فيها ذكرَ الأحاديث والروايات مرتبةً على أسماء الصحابة، فقد حوى هذا المَسندُ التشريع والسيرة والتاريخ.
والطَّيالِسيُّ رُغمَ شُهرته، لكنَّه لم يَنَل ما يستحقُّ من العناية والبحث والدراسة، فجاء هذا الكتاب لسد هذه الثغرة، ولإبراز شخصيته، ولدراسة مسنده.وقد انحصر الجهد في هذا الكتاب في عدة أمورٍ أهمُّها:
1- استخراج المرويات التاريخية من المسند، ومن ثمَّ تخريجها تخريجاً دقيقاً، مع بيان درجة صحتها، وذلك عن طريق الاستعانة بأقوال العلماء في ذلك.
2- مقارنة هذه المرويات بمرويات المؤرِّخين من كتب التاريخ العام والسيرة والطبقات.
3- تفنيد الروايات الضعيفة الواردة في المسند، والتي تتعارض مع الروايات الثابتة في كتب الحديث والسيرة والتاريخ.
4- شرح الروايات، وتحليلها، وتوثيقها، ونسبة الأقوال إلى قائليها.
وقد اشتمل هذا الكتاب ثلاثة فصول:
فالفصل الأول تَضَمَّن دراسةً لحياة الطيالسي من خلال التعريف باسمه، وكنيته، ولقبه، ومولده، ووفاته، ونشأته، ورحلاته.
أما الفصل الثاني: فقد تضمَّنَ دراسةً لشيوخه وتلامذته، وثناء العلماء عليه، ومؤلفاته، وعصره، وكذا التعريف بالمسند، ومنهجه، وموارده، وأهميته.
أما الفصل الثالث: فقد حوى دراسةً تحليليةً لمرويات المسند التاريخية في عصر الرسالة.
