علم الحديث أشرف العلوم وأجلها عند المسلمين من بعد كلام الله سبحانه وتعالى، وقد تدارك المسلمون الأوائل حديث الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم فنقلوه كابر عن كابر وأوصله كما سمعه أول آخر. ومع التوسع الحاصل في الدول الإسلامية وموت المحفظة والرواة، رأى علماء الأمة ضرورة تدوين الحديث وجمع أصوله وضبطه وحفظه وقد يسر الله لهذه المهمة علماء تقات حفظوا قوانينه وأحاطوا به مصنفوا فيه التصانيف العديدة التي استشهر معها هذا التصنيف. وكان الناس في تصانيفهم مختلفي الأغراض فمنهم من قصر همته على تدوين الحديث مطلقاً ليحفظ لفظه ويستنبط منه الحكم كما هو مقصود أبي داود الطيالسي. والمسند يحوي فهرساً ليسهل على الباحث استخراج الأسماء من الكتب لمن طلب مسند واحد من الصحابة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أو مسند تابعي من الصحابة.
