هذا الكتاب جمع فيه مؤلفه ما وصل إلى عمله مما يتعلق بطرابلس من أخبار وما تعاقبت عليها من دول إسلامية وغيرها وما وقع فيها من ثورات وحروب منذ الفتح الإسلامي إلى أواسط حكم أحمد باشا القره مانلي.
وترجم فيه ابن غلبون لكثير من العلماء الطرابلسيين سواء منهم من رجل لتحصيل العلم، أو من تعلم في طرابلس، وذلك كثيراً من البلدان والأمكنة التي عرضت له أثناء التدوين وحدد مواقعها.
وقد مر على هذا الكتاب أكثر من مائتي سنة، وهو في مهملات الكتب لا يسمع به إلا القلة، إلى أن نشره الشيخ الطاهر الزاوي متمماً نواقصه وموضحاً ما غمض فيه فكان كما ذكر الشيخ الزاوي في تقديمه "نوعاً من الدفاع عن الوطن بتقييد حوادثه وبيان ما وقع فيه من وقائع تعلي من شأنه وتظهره أمام الناس بمظهر العظمة والكمال".
