الكتاب دراسة سريعة لحياة الشعوب البدائية التي لا تختلف في أسلوب حياتها عن طريقة إنسان عصور ما قبل التاريخ. نشأة الأعياد في حياة الإنسان، كلمة عيد أصلها واشتفافها حيث تناولت الباحثة الكلمة السومرية «EZEN» التي تعني العيد وأشرت إلى أنها كلمة كانت تعبر عن الفرحة والاحتفال الذي لا يرتبط بوقت محدد من أوقات السنة. وتناولت كلمة عيد باللغة الأكدية «isinnu» وأوضحت بأنها كلمة مقتبسة من الكلمة السومرية ولكنها تعني العيد الدوري الموقوت وبينت أيضاً الأسباب التي جعلت منها تعبر عن الأعياد الدورية رغم اقتباسها من الكلمة السومرية. وعرضت المعاني المختلفة التي كانت تعبر عنها كلمة عيد باللغتين السومرية والأكدية، ثم تناولت الباحثة أنواع الأعياد والاحتفالات القديمة بعد أن قسمته إلى عدة أقسام، (أعياد القرى، أعياد المدن الكبرى). وتحدثت عن عيد آكيتو خلال الفترات السومرية والبابلية وقسمته كذلك إلى عدة أقسام، الأول يتضمن تحليل كلمة آكيتو والتي اعتبرتها تعني «استنزال المطر». وهذا يعني أن احتفالات آكيتو في بلاد وادي الرافدين ما هي إلا استمرارية لتلك الطقوس السحرية التي مارستها كثير من شعوب العالم من أجل استنزال المطر في حالة انحباسه، وأخير فقد تحدثت الباحثة عن الزواج المقدس خلال الفترات التي سبقت الألف الأول قبل الميلاد وذلك لأن الإشارات التاريخية المدللة عليها لم تربطها بشكل واضح مع احتفالات عيد آكيتو. وعرضت لشعائرها في الأدوار التاريخية المختلفة.
