على وقع الكثير من الأحداث الإقليمية والدولية الساخنة خلال عقدي الثمانينيات والتسعينيات وما تلاهما، مرت العلاقة بين ما عُرف بــ "الصحوة الإسلامية" وقادتها من جهة، والسلطة السياسية في السعودية من جهة أخرى بمنعطفات ومتغيرات عديدة، تفاوتت بين التهدئة والإحتواء والصِدام والمواجهة والإعتقال.
ومن جهة أخرى، شهد خطاب قيادات الصحوة تغيّراً وتطوّراً فرضته الأحداث والسياقات والضغوطات والجماهير والصراعات والحروب التي شهدتها المنطقة والعالم، والتي دخل فيها الخطاب الإسلامي دائرة الإتهام.
وقد كان لخطاب قيادات الصحوة الإسلامية حضور فاعل في مطالب الإصلاح السياسي في السعودية وبسقفٍ مرتفعٍ أحياناً، وهو ما سرَّع من قدوم لحظة المواجهة.
هذا الكتاب هو أطروحة دكتوراه في العلوم السياسية من جامعة أكستر بالمملكة المتحدة، استطاع خلالها الباحث الدكتور منصور الشامسي أن يقوم بجهد توثيقي وتحليلي موسّع ومُجهد، اعتنى فيه بشكل مكثّف بخطاب وكتب وأفكار وتحولات ونشاط أبرز رموز الصحوة الإسلامية: سفر الحوالي، وسلمان العودة، وناصر العمر الذين قادوا قاطرة الصحوة الإسلامية، بحمولتها الفكرية وصراعاتها السياسية، في دول الخليج، وكان لهم تأثيرهم الواسع في العالم العربي.
