ان الرحلة ضرب من ضروب النشاط البشري تمتد جذورها إلى بدايات الجنس البشري فقد رحل البشر من مكان لآخر جريا وراء المرعى وهجرة في سبيل الرزق وكانت بعد ذلك الرحلات التجارية وقد كان للعرب فى الجاهلية رحلاتهم التجارية من وإلى مكة مركز العالم العربي والإسلامي بل والعالم القديم ايضا . ثم جاء الاسلام وصارت مكة قبلة المسلمين في بقاع الأرض فكانت الرحلات السنوية إليها متواترة بقصد قضاء مناسك الحج وكان العلماء المسلمين يقومون كغيرهم بتأدية فريضة الحج ولكن رحلتهم كانت لا تقتصر على ذلك بل كانت سعى إلى تحصيل العلوم الدينية النافعة بالدرس أجلة العلماء في العواصم الثقافية التى يمرون بها خلال رحلاتهم ولذلك كان بعضهم يذهب إلى الحج قبل موعده بزمن كاف ليجد من الوقت ما يحصل به زاده من المعرفة ونلاحظ في هذا الكتاب وفرة عدد الرحلات المغربية المدونة مثل رحلة ابن رشيد الفهري المسماة "ملء العيبة بما جمع في طول الغيبة من الشام ومصر ومكة ، ورحلة أبي القاسم التجيبي ، ورحلة ابن بطوطة ورحلة ابن جبير وغير ذلك الكثير.
