يأتي هذا العمل كدراسة نقدية إستدلالية لمجموعة من الشبهات التي أثيرت حول قضية الإمام المهدي عليه السلام، عمل الشيخ "محمد جميل حمود" على التحقيق فيها بغية رد ودفع كل تلك الشبهات التي طالت الإمام المهدي المنتظر.
يعتبر الكاتب أن الإمام المهدي هو من صلب العقيدة للإمامية التي لا تقبل التأويل والتحريف لذلك دأب للرد على كل من يشكك في هذه العقيدة، ويبدأ "بالرد على شبهة السفاريني" الذي اعتبر أو ولادة المهدي هو ضرب من الجنون والهذيان، يلي ذلك مجموعة من "النصوص على ولادة القائم صاحب الزمان" وفيها يؤكد الكاتب على أن ولادته كانت حقيقة واقعة لا تقبل الشك بعد ذلك يتطرق إلى "ولادة الإمام المهدي في كتب المخالفين وأن الأئمة اثنا عشر وأنهم من ذرية الصديقة فاطمة عليها السلام. ثم يبين الكاتب "الأسباب الداعية لإنكار جعفر ابن اخيه الإمام المهدي" في العصر العباسي. أما "طول عمر الإمام عليه السلام" إلى يومنا هذا وبقاؤه حياً إلى ألآن فتلك أسباب يشرحها الكاتب في فصل خاص، ثم "ما الفائدة من غيبة الإمام عليه السلام؟". وعدم ظهوره للناس وما هو دوره في حفظ الشرع والملة يرد الكاتب على هذه الشبهات بأدلة توضح ما التبس على الفهم وفيها رد على "شبهة ابن حجر الهيثمي في إيتاء الحكم للإمام وهو صبي" و"شبهة رونلدسن ودفعها". وأخيراً رأي العلامة الصدر في إمكان المشاهدة وعدمها، ودور علامات الظهور والفائدة من دراستها والتهيئ لها برأي الكاتب يقول: "وللعلامات دور بارز في تنشيط الحركة الثقافية المهدوية لدى القواعد الشعبية.. بحيث تجعل المؤمن المنتظر يعيش حالة التربص واليقظة الدائمة ليكون حارساً أمنياً على المحافظة على مبادئ إمام الزمان...".
