الوجوه والنظائر: هو نوع من أنواع التفسير في القرآن الكريم، والنظير هو المماثل والشبيه، والمقصود هو البحث في الألفاظ القرآنية المتماثلة، وبيان وجوه معانيها المتباينة.
وتنقسم الألفاظ إلى أربعة أقسام هي: المشتركة، والمتواطئة، والمترادفة، والمتزايلة. فالنظائر هو بحث في الألفاظ المشتركة، والمتواطئة، والمترادفة، وبيان وجوه معانيها المختلفة. وهذا هو من معجزات القرآن حيث كانت الكلمة الواحدة تنصرف إلى عدة وجوه، ولا يوجد ذلك في كلام البشر. ويبدو أن من أوائل من كتب في "الوجوه والنظائر" مقاتل بن سليمان (150هـ) وابن الجوزي (597هـ) وابن الدمغاني (564هـ).
ومؤلف الكتاب المحقق: محمد بن العماد المصري (887هـ) وهو صوفي معتدل، وإذا حاولنا أن نحدد مدى أصالته فيكفينا ما يقوله عن نفسه في افتتاحية كتابه: (قد استخرت الله تعالى في تأليف كتاب أجمع ما فيه ما جاء من الآيات أو ما فيه من الوجوه والأشباه والنظائر، كما ستقف عليه إن شاء الله تعالى أجمعه من كتب التفاسير واللغة وغيرها، وسميته "كشف السرائر في معنى الوجوه والأشباه والنظائر" أي أنه قام بدور الجامع وقد تبين لنا أنه جمعه من عدد كتب: الوجوه والنظائر لمقاتل بن سليمان 150هـ, الوجوه والنظائر لأبي عبد الله الدمغاني 564هـ, أنوار التنزيل وأسرار التأويل للبيضاوي 691هـ.
واعتمد عليها اعتماداً كبيراً يكاد أن يكون نصيباً في جمعه، ويمكن أن نقول إن ابن العماد حفظ لنا شيئاً عزيزاً من تراثنا الإسلامي، ويمكن أن نقول أيضاً إن هذ الكتاب هو أول بحث ينشر عن ابن العماد. وقد التزم المحقق منتهى الأمانة العلمية في تحقيق نصوص الكتاب.
