إن دراسة سيكولوجية السلطة تعني فهم السلطة التي يخضع لها الفرد، أو التي تحاول أن تخضع الفرد لها، ولمعرفة ما تريده من الفرد وما يمكن أن تحققه له للاطمئنان إلى خضوعه لها، أو ليرفض ذلك الخضوع، كما تعني تلك الدراسة معرفة مرجعية بعض مواقفها، وبعض قراراتها وبعض تصرفاتها، التي قد لا تعجبه ولا يرضى عنها، ليجد لها الفرد عذراً، أو لا يجد، يلوم أو لا يلوم، يقبل أو يعارض تلك المواقف والقرارات والتصرفات. ومن أجل ذلك، ولأن سيكولوجية السلطة موضوع جدير بالبحث والدراسة، يحاول هذا الكتاب إظهار بعض جوانب سيكولوجية السلطة (السلطة التي تملك إصدار القرار... الأمر افعل أو لا تفعل) من وجهة نظر نفسية اجتماعية تنطلق من طبيعة السلطة ذاتها، من الخصائص والسمات المشتركة التي تتسم بها فعل من في السلطة، ومن المفاهيم والتصورات التي يكاد يجتمع حولها كل من في السلطة بشكل أو بآخر.
