حينما صدرت الطبعة الأولى من هذا الكتاب بالعربية أحدثت ضجة في أوساط المثقفين، فبعضهم هاجم الكتاب بشدة بل وهاجم المؤلف (تولستوي) ليس في مجال مضمون الكتاب فقط بل شنّ عليه هجوماً من نوع آخر، كما استغرب أحدهم كيف يقبل مترجم أن يترجم هكذا كتاب، وكيف يُقدم دار نشر على نشره، منطلقاً في ذلك من أن شكسبير لا يطاله النقد إلا تمجيداً وتعظيماً.
في حين رأى آخرون أن كاتباً كبيراً من حجم تولستوي يستحق أن يُسمع رأيه.
أما نحن، في دار الحصاد، فنعود ونكرر ما قلناه في الطبعة الأولى: (ماذا نفعل على الرغم مما اعتدنا عليه من تعظيم وتمجيد شكسبير، ألا يحق لنا الإستماع إلى تولستوي؟ وما يُضير ذلك، فالزمن الآن زمن تحطيم الثوابت، على الرغم من أن تولستوي أصدر رأيه في شكسبير منذ بداية القرن العشرين.
لا شيء فوق النقد، فلنستمع بلا تزمّت إلى تولستوي العملاق).
