على الرغم من المكانة الكبيرة التي كان الشاعر محمد بن مناذر يحتلها في العصر العباسي الأول إلا أنه لم يحظ في كتابات الباحثين بالمكانة التي يستحقها، وهذا مما قادني إلى التساؤل عن أسباب ذلك، فوجدت أنه من أهم تلك الأسباب ضياع ديوان ابن مناذر - هذا الديوان الذي وصفه ابن النديم من بين ما وصفه من دواوين - الأمر الذي جعل الباحثين لا يهتمون بأخبار الرجل وأشعاره، على الرغم من أن تلك الأخبار توضح لنا مدى المنزلة الرفيعة التي كان يتمتع بها بين شعراء عصره، مما دفعني إلى جمع شعره وتحقيقه، على الرغم من الصعوبات التي واجهتني عند محاولة الحصول على كثير من المصادر المطبوعة والمخطوطة على السواء.
وقدمت الكتاب مقسماً إلى مقدمة تتناول مكانة الشعار وتعريف به وبديوانه، ثم أقسام الكتاب الثلاثة وهي (الصحيح من شعر ابن مناذر، الشعر المنسوب إليه وإلى غيره، الشعر المنسوب إليه وليس من شعره)، وأخيراً التخريجات وإثبات نسبة الأبيات في الأقسام الثلاثة.
