منذ عصر الرسول، ومع ابن عباس فى القرن الأول، ورجال اللغة فى القرن الثانى (باستثناء الزجاج فى القرن الرابع ت 311 هـ)، إلى الجاحظ المفسر بالرأى فى القرن الثالث. نقف حينا عند ابن جرير الطبرى أمام المفسرين النقليين فى بداية القرن الرابع. وقد انصرف جهد الطبرى منذ البداية إلى أن يجمع التراث النقلى فى التفسير مفردا اياه من تراث الحديث كله. هذا أولا، ثم أخذ ينخل هذا التراث بمقاييس نقدية ساعده عليها ما زود به نفسه من ثقافة عصره كلها وكانت حركته الذاتية فى حدود التفسير اللغوى ومدرسة التفسير العقلى.
وعند تلك المدارس: مدرسة اللغة، مدرسة العقل، ومدرسة النقل آثرنا بعد أن نتوقف فما يزال للقول فيها متنفس، وما تزال جوانب كثيرة منها تحتاج إلى جهود وكشف، وينبغى أن نشير إلى أننا فى معالجتنا لمنهج المفسرين حاولنا أن نربط بين شخصية امام المنهج ومنهجه، لأننى أوقن أن عمل الرجل يعكس شخصيته بكل جوانبها ما دام عملا أصيلا، ليس هذا فحسب، بل العمل الأصيل يعكس صورة العصر كله.... هكذا نجد تفاسير القوم تعكس صورة عصرهم الحضارى إلى جانب ما تعكسه من شخصية المؤلف.
وحرصت فى تناول كل منهج على بيان مدى ذوق صاحبه للنص القرآنى. وما محاولة الفهم للنص القرآنى إلا خطوة للصعود إلى تذوق النص القرآنى. وعدا ما استلزمته ضرورة البحث من التوقف عند الزجاج فى القرن الرابع بإعتباره ذروة مدرسة اللغويين، وإن كانت حياته، معظمها تنتمى إلى القرن الثالث، وعند المرتضى (ت 436 هـ) بحديثه الصريح الواضح عن منهج مدرسة العقل، فى التفسير، ودراستنا له إنما هى توطئة موضحة لدرس الجاحظ -فيما عدا ذلك الاعتبار فان زمان هذا البحث لا يتخطى القرن الثالث، فحتى الطبرى (ت 310 هـ) أنجز تفسيره قبل بداية القرن الثالث، وإذن فحديث هذا الكتاب يدور حول مناهج تفسير القرآن حتى القرن الثالث الهجرى.
