أدى تورّط الولايات المتحدة وإسرائيل في تزويد الأسلحة لإيران إلى خلق إحدى أخطر الأزمات في إدارة الرئيس الأمريكي رونالد ريغان في السنوات الأخيرة، وأثار الدهشة في إسرائيل.
لقد تحوّل نبأ صغير نُشر في مجلة لبنانية محدودة الإنتشار في تشرين ثان 1986، بسرعة مذهلة إلى "قضية" جديدة وشبكة معقدة من العلاقات الدولية، تورط فيها موظفون حكوميون، وعملاء إستخبارات ووسطاء خاصون، كما الحق الكشف عن هذه القضية ضرراً بالغاً بمكانة الرئيس الأمريكي وأظهره شخصاً غير مستقيم يخفي غير ما يظهر.
نظراً للطابع المتعصب لنظام الخميني وكراهيته الشديدة للولايات المتحدة وإسرائيل، كان هناك من أيّد أحداث تغيير وتحوّل في المواقف التقليدية لكل من إسرائيل والولايات المتحدة، ودعا إلى تأييد العراق في حربها ضد إيران، غير أن إجراء دراسة دقيقة للتطورات التي شهدتها منطقة الشرق الأوسط في سنوات الثمانينات، تبين أنه لا يوجد لدى إسرائيل والولايات المتحدة أي خيار حقيقي لتفضيل إحداهما على الأخرى (العراق وإيران)، فتوثيق العلاقات مع هذه الدولة ليس بالضرورة أن يكون على حساب الأخرى.
بعبارة أخرى، وعلى المدى البعيد، يبدو أن إيران ما بعد الخميني مؤهلة لأن تعود وتنمّي علاقاتها مع إسرائيل، ولو كانت بأقل من مستوى العلاقات التي تميزت بها علاقات إسرائيل - إيران في عهد الشاه.
إن تفاصيل كثيرة من هذا التعاون تُنشر هنا لأول مرة، رغم أن ثورة الخميني وضعت نهاية التعاون المشترك بين إيران وإسرائيل، إلا أن الجهود لإيجاد قنوات إلى طهران لم تتوقف، كما أن طهران رغم تصريحاتها العلنية، لم تعمل على وقف هذه الجهود، بل على العكس، ففي عهد الخميني، كما في عهد الشاه، وُجدت في طهران عناصر كانت على إستعداد للإستعانة بإسرائيل من أجل التأثير على السياسة الأمريكية ومن أجل شق طريق لهم إلى أسواق الأسلحة الأمريكية.
