المقصود من فكرة التنمية هو مواجهة مظاهر التخلف فى المجتمعات النامية وذلك بمحاولة الإستغلال للموارد، والأخذ بمظاهر التحضر، والنهوض بالتعليم بمستوياته المختلفة، وكذلك تطبيقات التكنولوجيا. فالتنمية إذن هى عملية تغيير متعمد يسعى لتحقيق المصالح العليا للمجتمع، وللوصول إلى هذا الهدف لابد من تكاتف جهود المجتمع المدنى مع السلطات الرسمية لتحقيق أفضل ما يمكن للنواحى الإجتماعية والثقافية والإقتصادية.
وقد أهتمت هذه الدراسة التى بين القارئ بهذا الموضوع من حيث اهتمامها بالدور الذى تقوم به الجمعيات الأهلية فى عملية التنمية الإجتماعية للمجتمع.
وقدمت المؤلفة محتويات الكتاب فى خمسة فصول نظرية، وفصل نظرية، وفصل سادس يحتوى على دراسة ميدانية، وكانت الفصول كالتالى: الفصل الأول (المجتمع المدنى وتنمية الجمعيات الأهلية وتنمية المجتمع). الفصل الثانى (دراسات ذات صلة بالجمعيات الأهلية ). الفصل الثالث (النظريات السوسيولوجية المفسرة لدور المجتمع المدنى). الفصل الرابع (الجمعيات الأهلية "البناء - التنظيم - الأدوار"). الفصل الخامس (الجمعيات الأهلية وتنمية المجتمع "نظرة مستقبلية").
