يقدم هذا الكتاب عرضاً وصفياً - تحليلياً مقارناً لنتائج الدراسة الميدانية ومسح اتجاهات الرأي العام العربي نحو مسألة الوحدة العربية، الذي قام المركز به بالتعاون مع مؤسسات عربية معنية أخرى، وجرى تنفيذه في عشرة أقطار عربية بهدف قياس مدى حضور قيم العروبة الجامعة والوحدة في أوساط الرأي العام العربي.
يرى الكتاب أن مسألة الوحدة والهوية العربية احتلت مكانة الصدارة في الخطاب العربي الحديث والمعاصر كما في الثقافة السياسية العربية، وربط العربُ، نخباً وجماهير، الكثيرَ من طموحاتكم في التنمية والاستقلال والتحرير بقيام دولة تجمعهم من المحيط إلى الخليج تتخطى حدود الدولة القطرية التي كان عليها أن تنتظر عقوداً من الصراعات والتحديات والخيبات، لكي تنتزع شيئاً من شرعيتها وهويتها الوطنية. لكن على الرغم مما أخذت الدولة القطرية تحتله من مكانة في تشكل الهوية الوطنية لدى العرب، فلا تزال مسألة الوحدة والهوية العربية حاضرة بقوة لدى نسبة عالية منهم.
يحتوي الكتاب ستة فصول إلى جانب المقدمة والخلاصة العامة والخاتمة. يتناول الفصل الأول: "الإطار الفكري والمنهجي لاتجاهات الرأي العام العربي"؛ والفصل الثاني: "الوحدة العربية: جدل الفكر والواقع"؛ والفصل الثالث: "الروابط بين الشعوب العربية وعوامل وحدتها"؛ والفصل الرابع: "الوحدة والتكامل في اتجاهات الرأي العام العربي"؛ والفصل الخامس: "الوحدة العربية: النماذج والاتجاهات والمعوقات"؛ والفصل السادس: "عروبة تتجدد وتأبى الاندثار".
