كتابُ "روح الشرائع" هو سِفْرُ مُونْتِسْكيُو السياسيُّ الرائع، ولم يؤَلَّف في الغرب ما يفوقه، وهو "أعظم كتابٍ فرنسيِّ في القرن الثامن عشر"، والكتابُ جامعُ لفلسفة الإشتراع وحكمة التاريخ والفقه الدستوريّ، وكتابُ "روح الشرائع" سِفْرٌ تحليليٌّ أمكن تعديلُ بعض جزئياته، ولكنه ظلَّ قائماً في مجموعه، وهو في موضوعه أكثرُ الكتب تأثيراً في الأزمنة التي جاءت بعده، ولم يَظْهَر مثلُ واضعه كاتبٌ مَثَّلَ في التاريخ السياسيِّ دوراً مهماً، فقد استوحته دساتير فرنسة منذ ذَرَّ قَرْن الثورة الفرنسية، وكان له الأثرُ البالغ في وضع دساتير العالم حتى يومنا هذا، ومن الواضح انتحالُ الدساتير الأمريكية لمبادئه في فصل السلطات على الخصوص، وكتابُ "روح الشرائع" هو الأثرُ الذي عُدَّ به مُونْتِسْكيُو واضعَ علم السياسة وعلم الاجتماع في الغرب.
