لقد كثرت الدراسات والكتابات عن مدينة بغداد عاصمة للخلافة العباسية والعراق منذ تأسيسها سنة (145هـ - 762م) لحد الآن، كونها تحتل مكانة مرموقة في الوطن ا لعربي والعالم الإسلامي، وتتمتع بخصائص جغرافية، وتاريخية، وسياسية، وإقتصادية، وإجتماعية، وثقافية، ودينية، نادراً ما تنافسها مدينة أخرى في تلك الخصائص والسمات قديماً وحديثاً... تنوعت عنها البحوث في مختلف الميادين العمرانية، والحضارية، والثقافية، والتخطيطية والهندسية، والآثارية...
وقد جاءت خطة البحث بتمهيد وخمسة فصول، ففي التمهيد تناول الكاتب عوامل نمو مدينة بغداد إذ توفر أكثر من عامل أثر في نموها، منها إقتصادي وسياسي وإداري وإجتماعي وحضاري فأوضحت المعالم العمرانية فيها وكذلك الأعراف والتقاليد والقيم... إلخ.
أما الفصل الأول، فقد تضمن على نحو مسهب الفئات الإجتماعية وما يندرج تحت هذا العنوان من البحث لعدد السكان، وأوضاع المجتمع بصورة عامة، أما الفصل الثاني، فقد تناول دراسة طوائف السكان الرئيسية من المسلمين، والنصارى واليهود، وأثر حركة الإصلاحات والتنظيمات العثمانية على الأقليات الدينية.
أما الفصل الثالث فقد خُصص لدراسة التنظيمات الإجتماعية للسكان، ومحاولة الكشف عن أثر التنظيمات على الحياة الإجتماعية في بغداد، أما الفصل الرابع، فقد كُرِس لدراسة المظاهر الإجتماعية التي تعكس واقع المجتمع والخصائص المعيشية لكل فئة من فئاته، وكيفية تفاعلها مع بعضها موضحاً المظاهر الدينية والأدبية، والفنية، والرياضية، أما الفصل الخامس، فقد ركز على دراسة الخدمات الإجتماعية، والبلدية، والصحية والتعليمية.
اعتمد الكتاب على عدد غير قليل من الدراسات والبحوث المنشورة في أمهات المجلات العلمية مثل مجلة لغة العرب، والمقتطف، والمشرق، والمورد الحافلات بمعلومات تاريخية إجتماعية ساهمت مساهمة جدية في تكوين بعض الصور في هذا الكتاب.
