رغم سقوط كارلوس الأخير وتحوله من صياد ماهر، جعل العالم يلهث خلفه لسنوات طويلة، إلى فريسة فى يد أعدائه، إلا أن الأمر لم ينتبه بمجرد إغلاق باب زنزانته عليه في سجن "سانتيه" الفرنسى، وسط أكبر حراسة أمنية، تفرض حول شخص واحد فى التاريخ.
وقد أنتهت عملية مطاردة "الثعلب"، أو "الشبح" أو "الرجل ذو الألف وجه بوقوعه فى الفخ، الذى نصب له بإحكام، لتبدأ محاكمته، التى يتوقع لها الجميع أن تكون من اشهر وأخطر المحاكمات فى تاريخ البشرية.
وقد قدم كارلوس نفسه إلى قاضى الإرهاب الفرنسى الشهير بروجيير كمناضل ثورى، وليس كارهابي ولعل هذا هو المحور الذى يدورحوله هذا الكتاب، أو السؤال الذى نسعى جاهدين لايجاد إجابة شافية له: هل كان كارلوس مناضلا ثوريا- كما يقدم نفسه- أم إرهابيا يحاول أن يصبغ أنشطته الاجرامية بصبغة نضالية؟!
كما يحاول الكتاب الإجابة على اسئلة أخرى على درجة كبيرة من الخطورة والأهمية. وفى الكتاب أيضا اعترافات كارلوس نفسه، وحديثه عن طفولته وصباه، اشهر عملياته وادق اسرار حياته.
وهذا الكتاب محاولة جادة للبحث عن حقيقة كارلوس لمعرفة ما إذا كان إرهابيا اثماً، أ نموذجا شيوعيا متطرفا، من بقايا النظام العالمي القديم، سقط مع النظام العالمى الجديد.
