إن معرفة علل الحديث من أجلِّ علوم الحديث وأدقها وأشرفها، وهو من أغمض أنواع علوم الحديث، ولا يقوم به إلا من رزقه الله تعالى فهماً ثاقباً، وحفظاً واسعاً، ومعرفة بمراتب الرواة، وملكة قوية بالأسانيد والمتون؛ ونظراً لأهمية هذا الفن وشدة الحاجة إليه عمل مؤلف الكتاب الدكتور محمد عبد محمد وفا المنصور إلى دراسته تحت عنوان "العلة في علم الحديث الشريف .. موضعها وأثرها". والغاية ترتيب وتبسيط المفهوم وتقريبه إلى طلاب العلم، والراغبين فيه، فأعاد ترتيب أنواع العلل بحسب تقسيم إبن حجر له، في كتاب (التقريب) وتتبع ما جاء به المحققون وجال الحديث في شأنه.
أما عن طريقة عمل المؤلف، فقد بدأ بحصر أنواع العلل ونسبتها إلى السند أو المتن أو كليهما ثم درس كل نوع، من دون أن يتعرض للإختلاف الوارد في بعض أنواع الحديث الذي تقع فيه العلة، واعتمد على أقوال المحدّثين والمتأخرين، تأصيلاً للرسالة وإحياءً لكلامهم، وسيراً بركابهم. ومن المعاصرين التزم المؤلف أقوال شيخه المحدث الدكتور نور الدين، والدكتور علي البقاعي، وأورد أيضاً بعض الأنواع الحديثية المتشابهة، وبيّن أوجه الإشتراك والإفتراق بينهما وأبرز أماكن تأثير العلة من عدمها (العلل الواقعة في السند والمتن معاً) ... ومسائل أخرى ذات صلة.
