الشَّهْرَزُوري، عثمان بن عبد الرحمن (557 - 643هـ، 1161 - 1245م).
عثمان بن عبد الرحمن، أبو عمرو، تقي الدين المعروف بابن الصلاح. عالم في الحديث والفقه والتفسير وأسماء الرجال. وُلد في شرخان، بلد قرب شهرزور. ثم انتقل إلى الموصل. تفقه على والده عبد الرحمن بن عثمان صلاح الدين. وسمع من أبي المظفر بن السمعاني، وعبد الصمد بن الحرستاني والشيخ موفق الدين المقدسي، وابن عساكر، وغيرهم. رحل إلى بغداد وهمذان ونيسابور ومرو ودمشق وحلب وحران وبيت المقدس. ثم رجع إلى دمشق، واستقر بها، وولاه الملك الأشرف التدريس بها في دار الحديث الأشرفية. له مصنفات كثيرة منها: معرفة أنواع علوم الحديث، ويُعرف بمقدمة ابن الصلاح؛ الأمالي؛ الفتاوى؛ شرح الوسيط؛ فوائد الرحلة؛ أدب المفتي والمستفتي؛ طبقات الفقهاء الشافعية؛ صلة الناسك في صفة المناسك. تُوفي في دمشق.

يتناول هذا الكتاب علوم الحديث النبوي الشريف للإمام ابن الصلاح محققاً. ويبدأ بالسيرة الذاتية والعلمية والحياتية للإمام، وثناء العلماء عليه وعلى مؤلفاته، وكيفية تأليفه لهذا الكتاب، وطريقته وخصائصه، وتسميته في النسخ المعتمدة. ويبين مزية فن علوم الحديث وإلحاف الحاجة إليه، ويفصل القول في خمسة وستين نوعاً من علوم الحديث، فيشرحها ويبين مدلولاتها دون ترتيبها في نظام سابق معين، وقد أخذ العلماء بعده بأسلوبه هذا في مؤلفاتهم.
ويجمع الكتاب لم تفرق في الكتب الكثيرة السابقة له، متكاملاً في فن التصنيف، ويمتاز بمزايا جعلته عمدة هذا الفن، ومنها أنه: يهتم باستنباطه الدقيق لمذاهب العلماء وقواعدهم من نصوص أئمة الحديث ورواياتهم في مسائل علومه، ويذكر حاصلها المناسب للمقام فحسب. ويضبط تعاريف المؤلفين السابقة، ويضع تعاريف جديدة منه، ويهذب عبارات السابقين، وينبه على مواضع الاعتراض فيها. ويأتي بجهد ضخم بنموذج في ترتيب أنواع علوم الحديث وقوانينه، فيعقب على أقوال العلماء بالتحقيقات والاجتهادات، ويرصد مسائل العلم بدقة وتحقيق وتواضع واحتياط يغلب عليه. ويعد هذا الكتاب مرجعاً ضخماً في موضوعه أثنى عليه الكثيرون من أئمة العلم.
