نتج عن الإستبداد الذي ساد خلال فترة العصر الوسيط، إتخاذ الأمراء والخلفاء والملوك النفي عقاباً فردياً وجماعياً لقهر المعارضين من مختلف الشرائح الإجتماعية، وإبعاد المخالفين في الرأي، وفك روابطهم عن المجال الذي ترعرعوا فيه أو احتضنهم، وإشعارهم بالمهانة والإزدراء، مخالفين في كثير من الأحيان النصوص التشريعية الإسلامية، رغم إعتمادهم أحياناً على مبررات دينية سياسية...
ورغم ذلك شكلت هذه العقوبة تحولاً إيجابياً فيما يتعلق بتطور ظاهرة العقاب من تعذيب الجسد، وتقطيع الأوصال، والإعتقال إلى محاولة إبعاد المذنب أو الجاني أو المعارض عن المجال الذي يشكل بالنسبة له فضاء إجتماعياً حميمياً مألوفاً مرتبطاً بالأسرة والعائلة والعصبية، مع الحفاظ غالباً على هذا الجسد، لكن بمحاولة إرهاقه بدنياً ونفسياً وتفكيك أواصره وعلاقاته المتنوعة.
وتجلت نتائج النفي المختلفة في الفقر والغربة والمكابدة وضياع الممتلكات، وأبرزت لنا غياب العدل والإنصاف، وسيادة نظام الأوتوقراطي الذي يسعى لترسيخ الهيمنة والتسلط والإكراه.
