كتاب النبض للمتعلمين الذي أهداه جالينوس إلى صديقه طوثون هو الكتاب الثالث من الكتب التي كان على طالب الطب أن يعلم بها قبل أن يسمح له بممارسة مهنته. وهو كتيب صغير يحوى اثنى عشر فصلًا، كلها قصير ما عدا الفصل الأخير، وقد شرح فيه جالينوس أسس علم النبض التي لا غنى عنها للمبتدئين. أما كتاب النبض الكبير فهو مقسم إلى أربعة أقسام: وصف جالينوس في قسمه الأول أصناف النبض، وذكر في الثاني كيف تعرف تلك الأصناف، ووصف في القسم الثالث أسباب تلك الأصناف. وختم كتابه هذا بذكر تقدمة المعرفة التى تكون من تلك الأصناف، وقد بدأ جالينوس كتابه النبض الصغير بذكر حقيقة هامة وهي أن العروق الضوارب كلها والقلب تنبض على مثال واحد. ولكن هناك عروقا جسها أسهل من جس عروق أخرى. ولا يزال الأطباء في القديم والحديث يفضلون جس العروق التي في رسغى اليدين.
