عندما قدم فالكوم نولن لأول مرة في أوائل السبعينات في الولايات المتحدة مفهوم علم تعليم الكبار ومفهوم أن الكبار والأطفال يتعلمون بشكل مختلف فإن فكرته تلك مثلت منتجاً جديداً آثار من الأبحاث والتناقضات العديدة فيما بعد، ومنذ الأيام الأولى لطرحها، ناقش معلمون الكبار معنى علم تعليم الكبار فعلاً. وقد تم تحليل علم تعليم الكبار هذا ونقده بشكل مكثف بعد أن تمت إثارة هذا الموضوع أحياناً بواسطة الحاجة إلى نظرية محددة في مجال تعلم الكبار.
وقد تم وصفه بشكل متناوب كمجموعة من المبادئ أو العناوين العامة (ميريام 1993)، أو كفلسفة (براث 1993)، أو كمجموعة من الافتراضات (بروكفيلد 1986)، وتعد المفارقة في هذه المرافق مؤشراً على طبيعة المعقدة والمحيرة لميدان تعلم الكبار، ولكن بصرف النظر عما يطلق عليها من تسميات فإنها تمثل محاولة مخلصة للتركيز على المتعلم والاهتمام بتعلمه.
في هذا الكتاب يطرح "مالكوم نولن" نظريته في تعليم الكبار ويعود الأثر الكلاسيكي المتميز في تعليم الكبار وتطوير الموارد البشرية وذلك من خلال تقسيمه مادة دراسته على ثلاثة أجزاء، عرض من أولها والذي هو بعنوان "جذور علم تعليم الكبار" مبادئ تعلم الكبار الجوهرية أو علم تعليم الكبار (الأندرا وعوجيا"، وتتبع كذلك تطور النظرية وركز على جوهر الخصائص الفريدة، والمتميزة للكبار كمتعلمين. أما في الجزء الثاني والذي عنونه بـ "تطورات في تعلم الكبار" فناقش تعلم الكبار حسبما هو مطبق ضمن تطوير الموارد البشرية كما وركز على التفكير الجديد حول تعلم الكبار، ويقدم أيضاً تفصيلاً موسعاً ودقيقاً حول تطبيق المبادئ الجوهرية لتعلم الكبار على المتعلمين المختلفين، وناقش بعدها التطورات الجديدة في فهم تعلم الكبار. هذا وعرض في الجزء الثالث والأخير ممارسات في تعلم الكبار قراءات مختارة تصف بالتفصيل الدقيق جوانب محددة من علم الكبار في موضع التطبيق وضمنه أيضاً استراتيجيات لتطبيق الافتراضات الجوهرية لصوغ التعلم وفق الفروق الفردية ووفق عمليات تطبيق تعليم الكبار في المؤسسات.
