بقيت العقلانية في الفكر الفلسفي تتأرجح بين ثنائيات مفاهيمية مزدوجة تتسع في كثير من الحالات لتصل إلى حد التناقض، وينعكس تناقضها مباشرة على الخطاب الفلسفي الذي تتحرك داخله، فعلى مستوى دائرة العلم، نجد التطور الكبير الذي حصل في العلوم، والذي أحدث ثورة معرفية ضخمة، أفرزت لنا جملة من المفاهيم والتصورات والمشكلات الأبستمولوجية الجديدة والتي أفروت بدورها عدداً من القضايا والفرضيات والنتائج التي أبطلت ما كان سائداً في الخطاب العلمي وحتى الفلسفي؛ والتي غيّرت كثيراً مما كان يعتقد أنه يقين وحقيقة، سواء بالنسبة للمفاهيم الفلسفية أو بالنسبة للمفاهيم العلمية ذاتها، هذا التطور العلمي أحدث عدم توافق بين الفلسفة بإتجاهاتها العقلانية والتجريبية، وبين إفرازات النشاط العقلاني والتجريبي للحركة العلمية المعاصرة.
عدم التوافق هذا الذي وقع بين الفلسفة والعلم في النشاط الأبستيمولوجي الحديث والمعاصر اعتبره "غاستون باشار GASTON BACHELARD" (1884- 1962) أزمة ابستيمولوجية ينبغي علينا تجاوزها، وذلك بالبحث عن حلول لها، من خلال البحث عن الخلل الذي أدى إلى إحداثها ويكون ذلك بالرجوع إلى تاريخ العلوم، مبرِّر ذلك في نظر باشلار هو أنّ الفلسفة بقيت تنظر إلى العلم بنظرة لم تتخلّص فيها من نير المصطلحات الفلسفية الضيقة التي ظلّت تمتاز بها في السابق، مما أوقعها في النسقية المغلقة التي لا تقبل أي جديد خارج نسقها الفلسفي.
في الوقت الذي عرفت فيه الساحة العلمية في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر وبداية القرن العشرين تطورات وثورات، وتحولات جذرية في بنية العلم، فظهرت نظرية الكم لماكس بلانك، ونظرية النسبية لانشتاين، مسّت نتائج هذين النظريتين على الأقل بنية الخطاب العلمي والفلسفي على حد سواء، ترتّب عنه سقوط مطلقات العقل وإنهيار مبادئه وفرضياته، مما جعل فلسفة العلم التي قد تشكّلت وقولبت نفسها لتكون صدى مطابقة المطلقات الفلسفية، وصيغة فلسفية موافقة لها، تقع هي الأخرى في مهاوي السقوط والإنهيار.
