يعد قسطا بن لوقا أحد أبرز المترجمين، من اليونانية إلى العربية، بالإضافة إلى كونه رياضيًّا، وطبيباً، وفيزيائياً، وفلكياً، وفيلسوفاً، وقد ولد في بعلبك (في لبنان) حوالي سنة 205 هجري (820م) وتوفي قسطا حوالي سنة 300 هجري (912 م) ويقال إنه كان مؤمناً مسيحياً ملكانياً، وهاك مايرويه عنه كتّاب السّير:
يقول ابن النديم في "الفهرست": قسطا بن لوقا، وقد كان يجب أن يقدم على حنين، لفضله ونبله وتقدمه في صناعة الطب، ولكن بعض الإخوان سأل أن يقدم حنين عليه، وكلا الرجلين فاضل.وقد ترجم قسطا قطعة من الكتب القديمة، وكان بارعاً في علوم كثيرة منها: الطب والفلسفة والهندسة والأعداد والموسيقى، لا يطعن عليه، فصيحاً باللغة اليونانية، جيد العبارة بالعربية. وتوفي بأرمينية عند بعض ملوكها، ومن ثم أجاب أبا عيسى بن المنجم عن رسالته في نبوّة محمد عليه السلام، وثم عمل "الفردوس في التاريخ".
وما لا بد من الإشارة إليه هو الرسالة التي بين أيدينا وهي "رسالة في الفرق بين الروح والنّفس" وهي توسم أيضاً ب "كتاب الفصل بين الروح والنفس" وهذه الرسالة توجد منها نسخة في "جوتا". وقد ترجمها إلى اللاتينية باروخ، وقد طبعت هذه الترجمة في اتسبروك سنة 1878.
وبالعودة لمتن هذه الرسالة نجد أن المؤلف قد طمح في هذه الرسالة للتميز بين الروح والنفس محاولاً أن يحدد مصادر ثقافته المرتبطة بهذا الموضوع، فيؤكد اعتماده، على بعض محاورات الفيلسوف اليوناني الشهير أفلاطون (427-347 ق.م.) مثل محاورة فيدون ومحاورة طيماوس.
