لقد أحدثت اللسانيات في عصرنا ثورة معرفية ومنهجية كان لها أثرها البارز في تطور الأبحاث النظرية والتطبيقية ليس فقط في فضاء اللغة وأنظمتها الدالة بل في حقول إنسانية وإجتماعية أخرى، ثم امتد أثرها إلى المشهد العلمي اللغوي العربي في سبعينيات القرن العشرين فطفق الدارسون يعرفون بها، ويوضحون قيمتها وأهدافها وكيفية إستثمارها في ترقية البحث في اللغة العربية، وبالرغم من تعدد مسالكهم في ذلك إلا أنهم مجمعون على أهميتها في فهم كثير من الظواهر اللغوية المتصلة بنظام اللغة العربية وتطورها وعلاقتها بغيرها من اللغات، بل نجدها تصحح كثيراً من الأفهام المغلوطة والأوهام الموروثة التي ترسبت في فكرنا.
إن هذا السفر أنموذج لتلك الكتابة التبسيطية الموجهة للقارئ المبتدئ الذي تحمل عناء السفر في طريق البحث اللغوي الحديث، مستشهداً له بأمثلة من اللغة العربية، لعلها تكون أداة للفهم، وحجة له يحتج بها على أهمية العلم وقيمته في تفسير خصائص النظام اللغوي.
