لقد ظهرت الإضطرابات النفسية والسلوكية مع وجود الإنسان على وجه الأرض وخاض بها المختصون كل حسب تخصصه، وهي قديمة متجددة ازدادت حدة مع الإنفجار السكاني والثورة العلمية والتكنولوجية وإزدحام حياة الأفراد التي لم تعد تتسع لكل ما هو جديد، وظهرت أدوات كشف وتقييم وتشخيص كثيرة ومعقدة لا يمكن لشخص واحد القيام بها، وذلك لشدة تمايز الأفراد الذين يعانون من هذه الإضطرابات.
وستعرض لبعض أدوات التشخيص الحديثة، كون التشخيص هو الخطوة الأولى لإختيار إستراتيجيات العلاج، ولا ننسى في الوقت نفسه ان دورنا كوننا متخصصين في التربية الخاصة ينحصر في عملية التشخيص والعلاج السلوكي كعلاج تكاملي مع العلاج الطبي الذي يقوم به الإكلينيكيون في عياداتهم الخاصة وبالمستشفيات.
بالإضافة لما سبق فإن إستخدام كثير من هذه الإختبارات والمقاييس يحاط بالحذر والتحرز، وذلك لعدم الإتفاق التام على تعريف الإضطرابات الإنفعالية والسلوكية وتفسيرها، ومن نافلة القول أن الكشف المبكر يؤدي إلى التدخل المبكر، مما يخفف من إنتشارها والحد من أثارها، ويجعل من الفرد الذي يعاني من أحد هذه الإضطرابات عنصراً فعالاً في مجتمعه.
إن الصحة النفسية والخلو من الإضطرابات النفسية والسلوكية هما وجهان لعملة واحدة، فالصحة النفسية تعني حالة دائمة نسبياً من التوافق الشخصي والإنفعالي والإجتماعي، أي توافق الفرد مع نفسه وبيئته، ولا تعني الصحة النفسية البرء من المرض أو أعراضه فقط ولكنها تعني حالة إيجابية من التوافق، ولقد حاولت جاهداً تغطية هذا المجال بأسلوب ميسر يكون في متناول المتخصص والقارئ.
