يعد إضطراب السلوك من الإضطرابات الأكثر شيوعاً في الوقت الحاضر بين الأطفال والتي يبدأ ظهوره خلال مرحلة الطفولة المبكرة، ولقد تعددت المسميات التي تعكس واقع الإضطرابات السلوكية والإنفعالية، وهذا التعدد يرجع إلى عدة أسباب منها سبب مهم وهو تعدد النظريات التي تحاول أن تفسر ظاهرة الإضطرابات السلوكية والإنفعالية لدى الأطفال، إلا أن مصطلح (الإضطرابات السلوكية والإنفعالية) هو الأكثر إستخداماً والأكثر شيوعاً من غيره من المصطلحات، وهو المتداول في الآونة الأخيرة أكثر من غيره.
وأكثر الأشياء التي نلاحظها على الطفل المضطرب سلوكياً وإنفعالياً للوهلة الأولى هو أن هذا الطفل غير قادر على تكوين صداقات طويلة المدى مع أقرانه ومع زملائه ومع أفراد عائلته، هذه هي الملاحظة الأولى التي تبرز أكثر من غيرها عند الطفل المضطرب سلوكياً وإنفعالياً، وإذا أردنا أن نعرف الإضطرابات السلوكية والإنفعالية تعريفاً واضحاً ودقيقاً فنواجه أيضاً صعوبة أخرى وهي أنه من الصعب أن نأتي بتعريف واحد واضح وشامل لتعريف الإضطرابات السلوكية والإنفعالية متفق عليه.
