إن علم الصوتيات هو ذلك العلم الذي يتناول دراسة الأصوات البشرية دراسة علمية من جوانب مختلفة ومتكاملة بدءاً من خروج الصوت من الممر الصوتي وانتهاءً بوصول الصوت إلى الأذن ثم المخ فيسمع ويدرك. إننا نسعى من خلال هذا العمل إلى تقديم خدمة لأبنائنا طلبة وطلبات اللغات والترجمة في كليات الألسن، الآداب، اللغات والترجمة، التربية، وأكاديميات ومعاهد اللغات تتمثل في تقديم شرحاً مبسطاً ومترجماً إلى اللغة العربية لمادة علم الصوتيات مشتملاً تمارين عديدة لتدريب الطالب على الممارسة الفعلية، متضمناً صوراً توضيحية لتوصيل المعنى المطلوب للكلمة، ومزيلاً بعدد من الملاحق النافعة لطالب اللغات والترجمة. إننا حرصنا على تقديم الكلمات الواردة في جميع التمارين مرتبة ترتيباً أبجدياً حتى يسهل على الطالب حفظها. كما حرصنا على وجود اختبار في ذيل هذا العمل يجيب عليه الطالب بنفسه بعد قراءته وفهمه له، ليقيس من خلال هذا الاختبار مدى استيعابه وقدرته على فهم هذا العمل. هذا وقد تم إرفاق أسطوانة مدمجة تحتوي على النطق الصوتي والترجمة الصوتية لأكثر من 2400 كلمة فرنسية واردة بالكتاب وأكثر من 500 كلمة مصورة مع الترجمة الصوتية والعربية، بالإضافة إلى شرح الرموز الصوتية وأمثلة عليها وملفات صوتية لسماعها، وكذلك معجم لجميع الكلمات الواردة في الكتاب ومفتاح ملفات الصوت. وهدية بداخل الاسطوانة دروس مزدوجة اللغة (فرنسي/عربي) في الحضارة الفرنسية، مع نبذة لأهم علماء فرنسا في القرن السابع عشر، وأهم الأحداث التاريخية في تلك الحقبة.
